The paragraph from Pam Montgomery's article that Helen had posted continues to stay with me as a meditation. (It won't go away! LOL) Seriously, the line I had drawn from it within the section below has become the missing puzzle piece that has shown up finally to pull together some very important questions I've had about my life.

'These elements which give us our breath, warm and light our way, quench our thirst and nourish our body are taken for granted as something that will remain. They barely even draw attention except in the dramatic displays they exhibit in weather. It is actually through weather that we have the most conscious experience of the elements.'

I grew up near the ocean. Fortunately, in the days I lived there the beach was still undeveloped, so there was the opportunity to experience an intact marine ecosystem. That's the clinical way of saying it. For a child who had many of life's shortcomings to withstand, the proximity to a beach was a saving grace. I had always known that, but didn't grasp how that could be.

...'through weather that we have the most conscious experience of the elements'.

Multiply that several times for the weather near a shore where it's far more visceral and amplified. I understand, now, that the limitations I had was compensated for in important ways by the elemental quality of the physical environment I was growing up in. Lucky thing that I was receptive to it.

No wonder so many people go to the sea to be revived.

I'm going to post this in the Thanksgiving to water, though it is all the elements combined.

Your post, Jennifer Adele, drew my attention to the line 'It is actually through weather that we have the most conscious experience of the elements.' In the last week there has been a mysterious variety of weather occurrences from one place to another. It prompted me to take out my 'Weather Wizard's Cloud Book' to read the 68 pages to get a handle on it. Pam Montgomery's line is very helpful. I appreciate that you shared it, Helena. Do you remember where Montgomery had written this?

I thought I would share these thoughts on water/plants/air from Pam Montgomery, herbalist/plant spirit medicine practitioner, author.

Today’s rain, the same rain that fell millions of years ago, feeds the emerging plants with the memory of growth. Perhaps it this wise old water that teaches the new shoots how to break through the ground and urges the miraculous joining of forces – sun, carbon dioxide and water – to produce oxygen which contributes to the delicate layer of blue atmosphere we call air. Air that swirls, air that roars, air that whistles, air that rushes circling the Earth on currents of change.
These elements which give us our breath, warm and light our way, quench our thirst and nourish our body are taken for granted as something that will remain. They barely even draw attention except in the dramatic displays they exhibit in weather. It is actually through weather that we have the most conscious experience of the elements.

The wind, the plants? The sun for our hearts.

Your comments are so helpful, Helena. Since engaging in an exercise discipline that makes lungs so important- buoyancy on the water - I almost feel like a different person. It gives me a different relationship to my inner and outer world, also. Joel's 'Sit Spot' journal today is about 'breath' and how it connects all things. Is there a particular place in this 'Thanksgiving address' you think this could fit, Helena? Oxygen comes from the leaves of the trees and plants....?

According to Chinese medicine the lungs hold grief. After living a while we all have some grief we are holding. Some of it from infancy. Maybe your lungs are wondering if you would be ready to face it and let it go.
The heart is the ruler, the seat of consciousness or awareness, houses the Spirit, integrates our inner and outer life, communication, interconnectedness with our individuality. Maybe these give some clues.

I have have heard of some of these techniques. I forget the name of it...if there is one name. Well, for the over 50 group, here's something-
Tap on your face. Instant face lift. It makes your muscles contract.

Heart and lungs didn't respond in the am? This sounds problematic. My teacher said, you must pay attention to breath, without it, none of the other exercises will work. : - ))

Sorry... we treat everyone this way, here. Welcome.
