Joel, I enjoyed reading your journal from your Michigan spot. It's pretty jarring to connect with different pieces of landscape. It's commendable that you continued the challenge even when you were visiting at home. It seems to be that having the c…

April 12, 640-720pm Cold, 30s. Sun setting WNW, further North than I thought. Sunny all day. I see May apples sprouted but clamming up, pulling in, out too early (night freeze coming). So different to see the trees/ shrubs/ branches criss-crossing i…

Speaking of North Star, check out my blog for an activity before you head back to HC.

April 9 1:22-2:05pm Yesterday I forgot to add that I found a dead turtle on the grass not far from the drainage ditch/steam. It looked like it had gotten caught in a storm on its way, too cold to move..? Have seen a dead snapper turtle in the area…

I try to use the North Star, that is my preferred way. I started off marking directions with the declination and found it interesting, my area was then 11 degrees West. It can be a good challenge to try to figure that declination thing out when arri…

When you mark the directions, do you do it by a compass or do you correct for magnetic declination? Seeing the North Star recently made me think about this. I just looked mine up -- 14 degrees West! That seems like a lot!

April 8 Here in Michigan still... 1050am-1135am Finally sun. Scattered few small puffy clouds in the sky. More sun than I have seen for months being in Hong Kong! Warmer 50. Heat wave. Brisk breezes from WNW. In daylight I could see the rock circle…

Wow what a great smell! This is really interesting, yes, thanks Charlie! My mind also thought of the breathing of water with the soil, the rains, the evaporations, the trickling down to groundwater/aquifers, and how this all interphases together. De…

That reminds me -- when I was outside last night the world smelled like sassafras roots. Today a big storm moved in. Thanks for making me think of that!

Reflections on the breath of Earth I’ve been thinking about Joel’s reference to the earth breathing and on a larger time scale the earth does breath. Every time a frontal system passes, the changing atmospheric pressures force air into the ground or…

April 3 1015 walk a few misty drops as biked earlier, none now. moist air mixing with dryer air. Wind makes it feel dryer, blowing from South and then from North, like breath. And pausing. few days ago, it was from the E, so it was like the mountain…

April 2 Gusty dryer monsoon winds over 30 mph today from the E. quieted down just as i was ready to go outside for night walk. Humidity under 70 % is dry (er), and noticeable. 905pm drawn to walk to the north edge (100 steps) of my spot. It goes int…

April 1 afternoon, I hear a cicadas. Summer is on its way. 930 pm even metered pulsing of crickets/insects. Sound is like a soft horse-hair brush hitting a cymbal/high-hat. 1018-1025pm sit cloud cover uniform, medium to high ceiling. 68 F wind com…

Greetings Joel,

Thanks for writing. Happy Summer Solstice, wherever it is you are seeing the sun these days. ; - )) HK did sound very challenging. It'll probably be an amazing experience to look back on. It sounds like a good decision to continue exploring your wilderness skills. Your writing about, too, is really good. I enjoyed reading your observations. You were taking the experience to a level beyond mere observation. I hope you'll keep us informed of how you're doing from time to time.

Blessings,
deerwoman

Greetings Joel,

I just realized that I hadn't visited your page, due to visiting your 'sit spot' discussion thread.

I hope you're out there in the wilds of urban Hong Kong enjoying the season.

Warm regards,
deerwoman
