It's great to see you on here. I will send you an invitation to the Class of 2010 group. Not a lot of activity there yet... you would be the first student member, actually. So perhaps you would be willing to help me greet people as they come in the door? I'll be sending out an invite to the rest of enrolled folks shortly...
Hi Judy. Here are descriptions of the places I mentioned in the Kamana forum:
1. The Palisades. This park overlooks the Hudson River. It is just south of the NY/NJ state line, right off the Palisades Pkwy. The strip of land between the Hudson and Palisades Pkwy. is very narrow (a mile or less), but very long (more than 12 miles). The top of the park is about 400' above the level of the Hudson river, and the bottom of the park is at the shore of the river. So the park is a big cliff, and there are 2 or 3 trails that will get you from the top to the bottom and back again. It is incredibly beautiful, and suprisingly remote - you cannot hear the parkway once you're within the park, at least at the lower portion.
2. Harriman park - HUGE! well, not as big as say, the Adirondacks, but it is home to bear, fox, etc. to get to it, you have to drive a little further - the NYS Thruway will bring you up there (I-87), and it's about an hour north of NY City. I do a lot of backpacking and overnight camping there. I once saw a flying squirrel.
3. The Kittitany mountains - that's a lot further west, at the NW corner of NJ, where it meets Pennsylvania. About 2 hours from NYC. The Delaware Water Gap is right there - a nice scenic park with mountains, etc.
Everything else I know of is even further away. New Paltz is a town also about 2 hours north of NYC. It is an international mecca for rock climbing, but there is a ton of wildlife there as well. I have seen Copperheads while climbing, and I once got within a foot of a porcupine.
Since I'm only K1, I wasn't really in the habit of looking for wildlife most of the times I visited all these places. I was always more interested in the scenery. Since starting K1, I have really only tried to do any tracking, or studying nature in my own backyard (which is flat oak forest). I would like to get out ANYWHERE with someone else, especially someone like you, who's also studying Kamana. If you wanted to go to any of those places I mentioned, I would be happy to be a "guide", though you're the more experienced naturalist.
One last thing - I have detailed trail maps of all of the places I mentioned. If you and your fiance would like to visit those places, I would be willing to lend you my map sets, as long as you promise to return them to me (i.e. by mail or whatever).
Oh, I just remembered! there IS a cool place here on Long Island I took the kids to - it's a wildlife preserve, and the birds all come and eat from your hands. there are deer and turtles - i presume fox too, though I never saw them. I never tried to track there, but it would probably be a lot of fun. there's a pond (swamp) and the beach is within the preserve also.
