I spent the day at the Sandbar with the Coyotes (ages 10-12). We practiced tracking in places a human might not normally want to go and found lots of sign. Then we climbed around on the logjam and played by the river. One student caught a little fish and we checked it out. Richie (an apprentice) made a handdrill coal with a Butterfly Bush spindle and a cedar fireboard, both of which he got at the Sandbar. It was a good day.

Hello All,
I've made a suggestion through Speaking of Faith's website that Jon Young, The Wilderness Awareness School and Nature Awareness in general be considered for a future show. I thought if anyone else had a interest in such a show happening that they could also suggest Jon Young as a future guest. I feel that Krista Tippett and the people with Speaking of Faith put together some wonderful shows that are deeply engaging and that a discussion with Jon Young on the program

Being married with young children means I need to be very effective with my time. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to my sit spot, however because I am so curious it often takes me longer. Someone mentioned that you can learn so much just from your walk in and I agree. I pass over an open sandy section and I always try and see who has been coming and going. I have had to kill many march/horse flies unfortunately. I do wonder about how others feel about killing non-native species that have bec…

Skykomish River Sandbar
I arrived around 9:50am. I gathered my things and then headed out over the train tracks. I paused, the sandbar and forest expanding before me, and listened. All was very quiet. I saw a robin up and to my left. He was brightly colored and sat motionless, silent. No songs, no alarms, no companion calls...I immediately dropped into my routines of invisibility and moved silently down the embankment and across the creek. I noticed old and semi-new tracks…

Hey everyone,
I hope this blog reaches you in good health and happiness! For the past 6 years I have dreamed of having a primitive camp where people can gather and practice the skills. Well, after 6 years and much procrastination and dreaming, it has started. I hope to start in our current location and as time progresses perhaps move to a more appropriate and secluded area. However, for now it is two members strong with a few interested parties. Our intentions are to create a community space…

Squeezing in that journal time here and there. I've completed the primitive plants, and am now doing a bunch of journals on flowering plants, laying the foundation for the major work here, I imagine ... all those families! To my dismay, I've discovered that I no longer own my Peterson Field Guide to Pacific States Wildflowers. To make a long story short, I did a big purge of my possessions about two years ago, just before a major move ... and I winnowed some of my naturalist guides down. I gu

Am journalling today about mayflies and realized that I believe that I saw a swarm of them last year on the way back from my sitspot undulating over the road next to the marsh at dusk. Which is a nice sign as to the health of my marsh since as ecological indicators, mayflies shout out, "Health!"
What a wonderful taxonomic name-- "ephemeroptera". these guys live underwater for about a year growing and molting as nymphs and then they emerge to an adulthood that only last…

Okay, I'm going to take a leaf out of PEZ' journal and blog my progress through K3. My books are spread out on my living room floor, and I'm poised to dive into Ferns! No more talk, time to journal!

This week we went to the Burke Museum of Natural History in Seattle with our Roots and Wings class (ages 4-6) and looked at skulls, gems, fossils, native Northwest artifacts, and taxidermied creatures. Our Coyote class (ages 10-12) did an Elder Service Day doing yardwork for our elder Walt and then played in the sand down at McCormick Park.

012810 The overcast skies finally cleared today after 2 weeks of gray. It was so beautiful to see some sunshine again across the new snow that fell over the last couple of days. I went out to bring in some firewood, then got my camera and went back out to photograph some tracks in the snow.
I believe I am seeing some fox activity, considerable activity in fact, both on the way to the woodshed and also on my back patio. I went over to the old den area, and yes, there were tracks around there too.…

Hello Villagers,
I need to call a vote on our unused "Music" box as I am tempted to do away with it promptly...(unless there is a brilliant idea)! Here is, at least an interesting idea, and I wish to know if you are interested.
I was curious if we could try a new use for this feature with an accompanying Tribe discussion group to debate our answer from the...(drum roll please)...

I was just listening to Jon Young's "Thru' Native Eyes" where he talks about the chances of seeing a fox being extremely rare [because they are so alert to our presence]. It just made me feel so privileged to have had the extraordinary experience in 2008 of having a fox take up residence in a burrow right up against the foundation of our house.
I don't know who originally dug out the burrow but I suspected a skunk was in it around Feb. 2008. Later we found a patch of skunk fur out by our orchard…

Dear Kate,
thank you for your messages. I also feel that nature can be overwhelming. The fact that we may sit, watch, listen, feel, share, be a small part of natures ways... the things we see, hear, feel, learn from it... it's humbling and uplifting. Thank you for sharing your experiences. The beavers, the tracks in the snow... it really does not matter where you are does it. From a city balcony to a spot in the woods, nature is there, ready to share.
Dear all,
thank you for sharing my experi…

There is a group of people in England (Simon Dale and his family) who are designing very low impact houses with local materials and helping other people learn how to do it too. The pictures of the interior are exquisite and cozy.
You can read their story and see more pictures here:…
